Who is doctor F. and why do we recognize him with just one letter? Who is he indeed – a well-known classic from a school textbook or “a great unknown”? Is he a relic of our historical past or our live interlocutor? What was the historical and environmental background of his life drama – the story of his progress, his successes and defeats? Why, thanks to or regardless of what did he become himself? Was he indeed a genius or just a fanatical workaholic? What did he leave behind? Finally, why do we still need him today and why do we talk about him anyway? A little book about great Franko is an attempt to answer briefly all those questions; the book is addressed not so much to literary scholars-philologists as to a wide circle of readers.
